Zoals je kan zien groeit zowel de penis als de vagina uit dezelfde gemeenschappelijke 'geslachtsstructuur'. Het is pas tijdens de ontwikkeling van het embryo dat ofwel de penis,ofwel de vagina zich zal vormen. Voor de penis heeft men het hormoon dihydrotestosteron.
